Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the fundamental principles and methods used in the study of the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations. This course covers key epidemiological concepts such as incidence, prevalence, risk factors, study designs, and the role of epidemiology in public health decision-making. Students will learn how to apply epidemiological methods to investigate disease outbreaks, identify causes of health conditions, and evaluate public health interventions. The course emphasizes the importance of data in understanding health trends and improving population health.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understanding Epidemiological Concepts: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of key epidemiological concepts, including incidence, prevalence, morbidity, and mortality, and how these measures are used to study health and disease in populations.
  • Exploring Study Designs in Epidemiology: Learn about different epidemiological study designs, such as cohort studies, case-control studies, and cross-sectional studies, and how they are used to investigate the causes of disease and assess health interventions.
  • Analyzing Disease Patterns and Risk Factors: Develop skills in analyzing the distribution of diseases within populations and identifying risk factors that contribute to the development of diseases, focusing on prevention and control measures.
  • Applying Epidemiology to Public Health Problems: Gain the ability to apply epidemiological methods to real-world public health problems, using data to guide decisions, inform policies, and design interventions aimed at improving health outcomes.

These outcomes aim to equip students with foundational knowledge in epidemiology, preparing them for careers in public health, healthcare, and research by providing the tools to understand and address health issues at the population level.
