Course Description

This course provides students with an in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of group therapy in various counseling settings. The course covers key topics such as group dynamics, stages of group development, therapeutic factors in group settings, and the roles and responsibilities of the group counselor. Students will learn how to facilitate group counseling sessions, manage group processes, and address issues such as conflict, communication, and cohesion within the group. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based techniques for fostering growth, trust, and positive change among group members.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understanding Group Dynamics and Stages of Development: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of group dynamics, including how individuals interact within groups, and the stages of group development (forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning).
  • Facilitating Group Counseling Sessions: Learn how to effectively facilitate group counseling sessions, including setting goals, managing group interactions, fostering communication, and guiding the group toward achieving therapeutic outcomes.
  • Applying Therapeutic Techniques in Group Settings: Gain proficiency in using various group counseling techniques, such as role-playing, problem-solving, and cognitive-behavioral interventions, to help group members develop insights, skills, and strategies for personal growth.
  • Managing Group Conflict and Promoting Cohesion: Develop skills in managing conflicts that arise in group settings, fostering trust and cohesion among group members, and ensuring that the group environment remains supportive and conducive to healing and growth.
