Course Description

This course introduces students to the foundational principles, techniques, and applications of one of the most widely used therapeutic approaches in mental health counseling. The course covers key concepts of CBT, including the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and how these interactions contribute to psychological distress. Students will learn how to assess, challenge, and modify cognitive distortions, as well as implement behavioral interventions to help clients develop healthier thinking patterns and coping strategies. The course emphasizes evidence-based practices for treating conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understanding the Fundamentals of CBT: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical framework of CBT, focusing on how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors interact to influence mental health and well-being.
  • Assessing and Identifying Cognitive Distortions: Learn how to identify maladaptive thinking patterns (cognitive distortions) such as catastrophizing, overgeneralization, and black-and-white thinking, and their impact on clients’ mental health.
  • Applying CBT Techniques in Counseling Practice: Gain proficiency in using CBT techniques, such as cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, exposure therapy, and problem-solving, to help clients manage anxiety, depression, and other psychological issues.
  • Developing Treatment Plans and Evaluating Progress: Develop skills in creating structured CBT treatment plans tailored to individual client needs, setting measurable goals, and evaluating client progress to ensure positive therapeutic outcomes.

These outcomes aim to provide students with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to apply CBT in clinical settings. The course prepares students for careers in mental health counseling, psychotherapy, and clinical psychology, equipping them with a widely recognized and effective therapeutic approach for treating a range of psychological conditions.
