Course Description

This is a culminating experience that allows students to apply the knowledge and skills gained throughout the Foundation Diploma in Public Health program to a real-world public health challenge in Malawi. Students will identify a pressing public health issue, conduct research, and develop evidence-based interventions or strategies aimed at improving public health outcomes. The course emphasizes critical thinking, research, project management, and collaboration. Students will work with community stakeholders, gather and analyze data, and present their findings and recommendations in a formal report or presentation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Applying Public Health Knowledge to Real-World Problems: Students will demonstrate the ability to apply public health theories, concepts, and tools to analyze and address a specific public health issue in Malawi, considering the local context.
  • Conducting Research and Data Analysis: Gain proficiency in conducting research, including identifying credible sources, collecting and analyzing data, and using evidence to support public health interventions and decision-making.
  • Developing and Proposing Public Health Interventions: Learn how to design and propose actionable, evidence-based interventions or strategies that aim to improve health outcomes in Malawi, taking into account cultural, social, and economic factors.
  • Presenting Findings and Solutions: Develop the skills to effectively communicate the results of the capstone project through a formal presentation or written report, highlighting key findings, public health recommendations, and the potential impact of the proposed interventions.

This capstone course aims to provide students with a hands-on, practical experience in public health problem-solving, preparing them for roles in public health research, program implementation, and community health improvement, with a particular focus on Malawi’s public health needs.
