Course Description

This course introduces students to the principles and applications of GIS technology, which is used to capture, store, analyze, and visualize spatial data. The course covers key topics such as GIS concepts, spatial data types, coordinate systems, data collection methods, and GIS software tools. Students will learn how to use GIS to solve real-world problems in fields such as environmental management, urban planning, transportation, and natural resource management. Practical sessions will focus on data analysis, map creation, and spatial modeling using industry-standard GIS software.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understanding GIS Concepts and Spatial Data: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the basic principles of GIS, including the types of spatial data (raster and vector), coordinate systems, and how GIS is used to manage and analyze geographic information.
  • Using GIS Software Tools for Spatial Analysis: Learn how to use GIS software to collect, manipulate, and analyze spatial data, focusing on map creation, georeferencing, and spatial querying to solve geographical problems.
  • Applying GIS in Real-World Scenarios: Gain practical experience in applying GIS tools and techniques to address real-world issues, such as environmental monitoring, resource management, urban planning, and disaster response.
  • Developing Skills in Spatial Data Visualization: Develop skills in visualizing geographic data by creating maps, charts, and reports that effectively communicate spatial patterns and trends to support decision-making processes.

These outcomes aim to provide students with a strong foundation in GIS technology, equipping them with the skills to analyze and visualize spatial data for various applications in environmental science, urban planning, geography, and other fields. The course prepares students for roles in GIS analysis, spatial data management, and environmental management.
