Human Nutrition: Micronutrients

Course ID
NFS207
Level
Professional Diploma

Course Description

This course focuses on the role of vitamins and minerals (micronutrients) in human health, exploring their functions, sources, recommended intakes, and effects of deficiencies or excesses. The course covers the physiological roles of micronutrients in energy metabolism, immune function, bone health, and other critical bodily processes. Students will learn how to assess micronutrient status and understand the factors that influence bioavailability. The course emphasizes the importance of micronutrients in preventing and managing chronic diseases, as well as their role in public health nutrition programs.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understanding the Role of Micronutrients in Health: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the physiological functions of essential vitamins and minerals, including their roles in metabolic processes, immune function, and maintaining overall health.
  • Exploring Sources and Bioavailability of Micronutrients: Learn about the dietary sources of vitamins and minerals, factors that affect their absorption and bioavailability, and how to optimize micronutrient intake through diet and supplementation.
  • Analyzing the Effects of Deficiencies and Excesses: Gain insights into the health impacts of micronutrient deficiencies (such as vitamin D deficiency, iron-deficiency anemia) and excesses (such as hypervitaminosis) and how these conditions are diagnosed and treated.
  • Applying Knowledge to Public Health and Clinical Nutrition: Develop skills in assessing micronutrient status in individuals and populations and designing nutrition interventions to address deficiencies, focusing on public health strategies and clinical applications.

These outcomes aim to prepare students for careers in nutrition, dietetics, public health, and healthcare, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to understand the critical role of micronutrients in promoting health and preventing disease.
