Course Description

This course explores the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of individuals from infancy through old age. This course covers major developmental theories and research findings, focusing on how individuals grow and change over the course of their lives. Topics include the stages of development, the influence of genetics and environment, and the role of culture in shaping development. Students will learn how biological, psychological, and social factors interact to influence human development at each stage of life, and how these changes affect behavior, relationships, and health.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understanding Theories of Development: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of key developmental theories, including those proposed by Piaget, Erikson, and Vygotsky, and how these theories explain changes across the lifespan.
  • Exploring Physical, Cognitive, and Social Development: Learn how individuals develop physically, cognitively, and socially from infancy through old age, with an emphasis on how these domains of development interact and influence each other.
  • Analyzing the Role of Genetics, Environment, and Culture: Gain insight into how genetics, environmental factors, and cultural contexts influence human development, and how these factors contribute to individual differences.
  • Applying Lifespan Development Concepts: Develop the ability to apply lifespan development concepts to real-world scenarios, including education, healthcare, and counseling, to support individuals’ growth and adaptation throughout life.

These outcomes aim to provide students with a broad understanding of human development across the lifespan, preparing them for roles in education, healthcare, counseling, and social services where knowledge of developmental processes is essential.
